SATIRE / PARODY

Three Council Candidates Establish Dollar General Intelligence Headquarters to Monitor City Hall

Campaign headquarters reportedly includes folding chairs, binoculars, and an alarming amount of free time.

AVENAL, CA — In what political scientists are already calling “extremely Avenal,” three candidates for Avenal City Council have apparently discovered the cheapest campaign headquarters in California: the Dollar General parking lot next to City Hall.

From this strategic command post, the trio can allegedly observe City Hall, keep one eye on the Fire Department, another on passing city vehicles, and presumably use a third eye to detect whatever secret conspiracy Facebook says is happening that afternoon.

According to absolutely nobody with credentials, the operation has been code-named “Operation Folding Chair.”

The candidates’ mission appears simple: sit near City Hall long enough and eventually catch city employees doing something suspicious.

Like arriving for work.

Leaving for lunch.

Driving a city truck.

Opening a door.

Closing that same door.

Or — perhaps most sinister of all — firefighters returning to the station after responding to an emergency.

Coincidence?

Yes.

Probably.

But coincidence has never stopped a good Avenal conspiracy theory before.

THE CITY HALL STAKEOUT THAT NEVER ENDS

Local residents have reportedly begun wondering whether the Dollar General parking lot is merely a campaign stop or whether the candidates have applied for permanent residency somewhere between the shopping carts and seasonal clearance aisle.

AvenalPress.com wishes to be extremely clear here: we have no verified information regarding anybody’s employment, income, housing situation, or whether Dollar General offers long-term political camping packages.

That’s private information.

Also, we don’t want Dollar General sending us a cease-and-desist because three lawn chairs suddenly lowered property values.

But when candidates appear to have enough available hours to conduct surveillance on municipal employees, firefighters, meetings, vehicles, parking spaces, and possibly suspicious-looking pigeons, voters may reasonably ask:

When exactly does campaigning end and neighborhood-watch cosplay begin?

Because normal candidates knock on doors.

They talk about water.

They discuss streets.

They explain budgets.

They propose economic-development ideas.

They tell voters what they’ll actually do if elected.

These candidates apparently prefer:

“WE SAW A TRUCK.”

Followed immediately by:

“WHY WAS THE TRUCK MOVING?”

And then somebody posts twelve paragraphs on Facebook.

BAD NEWS ABOUT THE JOB THEY’RE RUNNING FOR

There is also one small administrative detail that may come as devastating news to anyone imagining City Council as a glamorous full-time career:

Councilmembers don’t get their own giant City Hall offices.

There is no mahogany desk.

No executive suite.

No private bathroom.

No personal secretary.

No City Councilmember Batcave underneath Dollar General.

And the compensation is roughly $450 a month, meaning anyone planning to make elected office their permanent occupation may want to maintain a second revenue stream.

Perhaps surveillance consulting.

Or folding-chair rentals.

Because after taxes, $450 doesn’t buy much political empire.

It might, however, buy approximately 450 things at Dollar General that somehow each cost $3.75.

THE CONSPIRACY BOARD IS GETTING CROWDED

The larger problem is that nearly every ordinary city action now seems capable of becoming evidence in an imaginary criminal investigation.

Fire engine leaves station?

Suspicious.

Fire engine stays at station?

Even more suspicious.

City employee talks to another city employee?

Secret meeting.

City employee doesn’t talk?

Cover-up.

Mayor walks into City Hall?

Power grab.

Mayor walks out?

Fleeing the scene.

Someone buys tacos?

Follow the money.

At this rate, AvenalPress expects the candidates to unveil a giant corkboard containing red yarn connecting City Hall, the Fire Department, Dollar General, Taco Bell, the water tank and one confused employee from O’Reilly Auto Parts.

In the center:

THE CURRENT COUNCIL.

Underneath:

“WE KNOW SOMETHING IS GOING ON.”

What?

Nobody knows.

But something.

Definitely something.

IS THE COUNTY FUNDING THE CAMPSITE?

Naturally, because this is Avenal, another conspiracy theory must be created to fight the existing conspiracy theories.

So AvenalPress.com would like to irresponsibly ask:

Is Kings County subsidizing the Dollar General Surveillance Task Force?

Before anyone screenshots that sentence and calls the District Attorney:

No. We have absolutely no evidence the County is paying anybody to sit outside City Hall.

None.

Zero.

Please unclench.

It’s satire.

But considering the amount of county-versus-city political drama Avenal has endured, it would at least be hilarious if somebody eventually filed a public-records request asking whether the Board of Supervisors has a budget category labeled:

“Miscellaneous — Lawn Chairs & Binoculars.”

County Finance would probably return it with:

“Please stop emailing us.”

GOVERNING REQUIRES MORE THAN BEING MAD ONLINE

Here’s the uncomfortable part buried beneath the jokes.

Running for City Council should involve explaining what you’re actually going to do.

How do you improve streets?

How do you attract businesses?

How do you maintain reliable water infrastructure?

How do you manage public safety?

How do you balance a city budget?

How do you work with people you dislike?

Because governing is considerably harder than sitting outside City Hall waiting for somebody to commit a parking violation.

Eventually candidates have to graduate from:

“Everybody currently in government is evil.”

to:

“Here is my plan.”

And if your entire campaign platform requires binoculars, Facebook rumors and several uninterrupted hours beside Dollar General, voters might reasonably wonder whether you’re running for City Council or auditioning for an extremely low-budget remake of Homeland.

AVENALPRESS.COM INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

AvenalPress.com has dispatched our finest investigative reporter to Dollar General.

Unfortunately, he went inside for batteries and came back with laundry detergent, Takis, a phone charger, Halloween decorations in August and absolutely no evidence of municipal corruption.

The investigation remains ongoing.

The Takis are already gone.
